the artist, the art

Kris received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1984 from the
University of Alabama. Immediately following graduation, she became a flight attendant for American Airlines and was based in Los Angeles. She incorporated her art training into her traveling lifestyle by hand painting apparel for Colors Four, an LA boutique. Her designs reflected her travels, which had exposed her to the many diverse cultures and colors of the world.

Kris now lives in Nashville, TN, and flies international routes out of Chicago. When not traveling, she paints, which provides a physical and mental release for her mind’s saturated sights of the world. Her large, abstract, acrylic paintings are bold designs that emphasize color and texture as dominant elements. The abstract expressionism of Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Hans Hofmann are evident in her work. Color - field painter, Joan Mitchell has also been a significant influence.

Color-staining of raw canvas or wood is the basis for an open
composition. Kris builds her painting around a free - abstract central image. Her methods of applying paint are unique. She uses household brushes, sticks, squeegees and palette knives. This process reveals fragments of color and texture. Each layer emerges through to the next, giving the painting a birthmark, a journey and a history. This process enables the viewer to be transported through the story.
